The French stopper left the field along with the rest of his side after indicating to referee Fabio Maresca he had  at the Stadio Friuli before later re-emerging.

The 28-year-old received plenty of support from his colleagues and team-mates, who all criticised the behaviour of those supporters complicit, while Gianni Infantino for racist abuse.

Maignan himself later took to social media to hit out at those Udinese fans who enabled the abuse to happen, and suggested that the club themselves were 'complicit'.

Udinese chief Franco Collavino confirmed the Italian side would work hard to 'find those responsible'

'We are working to find those responsible, there may only be two or three people,' he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

'There were no chants, nothing perceived either by the referee or by the prosecutor's office. There were one, two, three unfortunates, and this is enough for it to be a very serious thing.

'We have already started looking at the images from the stadium cameras, we also need to listen to the audio.

At the Blueenergy Stadium, inside and outside, there are over 300 cameras, there is a lot of work to do in a very short time.

'A Daspo has a limited duration, but the club can decide to ban a fan from the stadium for a longer period of time. We will work to ban them from the stadium forever, for life.'

The club have been quick to take action, with a first fan already handed a life-time ban following a joint effort with the police, as per a statement from the Friulani.

Udinese re-iterated their stance as being 'firmly' against any form of discrimination, and promised to 'work tirelessly' to prevent any future incidents.

'We believe that such strong measures are necessary to send a clear message that racism has no place in football or society,' part of the club's statement read.

'Udinese Calcio stands firmly against any form of discrimination, and we are determined to create an inclusive and respectful environment within our football community.'

The French international claimed that he had heard 'monkey chants' from the first goal-kick of the game

Although the Udinese players appeared to show solidarity with Maignan the Curva whistled at the returning AC Milan side

They added: 'Udinese Calcio calls on all football stakeholders to unite in the fight against racism and discrimination, fostering an environment that celebrates diversity and promotes inclusion.'

Maignan gave his own emotional statement on social media after the match, and told fans that were aware of the abuse but did nothing to stop it that they were 'accomplices'.

He also suggested that a lack of punishment would make accomplices of the authorities, while thanking his team-mates for standing with him and joining him as he left the field of play.

After leaving the pitch for about ten minutes, Maignan and his team-mates returned to the pitch angry along with the entire team that had supported him.

Many Udinese players hugged and kissed the goalkeeper who consciously chose to send a signal asking the referee to suspend the match.

The 28-year-old French international said the supporters who witnessed the verbal attack and didn't say anything should be regarded as 'accomplices'

The 28-year-old's return to the pitch was marked by whistles from the Curva in a surreal atmosphere at the Stadio Friuli.

After being reassured by referee Maresca, Maignan returned between the posts. But, it wasn't long before the abuse started again, and following an announcement from the stadium speakers, the chants continued, prompting players to once again leave the field.

'We can't play football like this,' Maignan said after the match. 'At the first goal kick I heard monkey chants and I didn't say anything'.

'Second goal kick, they did it again so I called the bench and fourth referee. There needs to be very harsh sanctions. Just talking does nothing'.

“I was so confused and insecure. Because I thought I was beautiful. So many people told me I was beautiful. Who am I? I feel like a vase shattered across the ground, and left there in the alleyway. A chandelier that was cut from the ceiling, and then all the people left the house. I can’t imagine on this day, what it would feel like to recover. Am I allowed to be this sad? Am I allowed to lay on the ground in a heap and wail? I want to have hands again, and legs. I want to smile. I want to believe that I can. But again, I want to be sad for the rest of time. I want to wear my sadness in long strands. I want to lay on the ocean floor and weep stalactites. For a hundred years. A tree has fallen onto my chest. The sky is spinning, and it won’t slow down. I don’t want to feel any of this.” A excerpt of an untitled essay from NIGHTBIRDE The NIGHTBIRDE book “Poems for the dark” should be available for presale soon.
