won't the the final story told in the universe if one star of both shows gets his way.
Originally introduced in the second season of in 2009, quickly became one of television history's most iconic villains. The character met his grisly end in a Season 4 episode that aired in 2011, but this would not be the last fans saw of Gus. The owner of Los Pollos Hermanos, who was secretly a powerful drug kingpin, returned for the prequel series . While on the red carpet at the Primetime Emmy Awards, Esposito spoke with about the possibility of another spinoff series, and the actor made it clear he still really hopes to see a Gus Fring prequel series.
"Should there be [another spinoff]? I think eventually there should be, and there might be," Esposito said. "I have a lot of premises I'd like to push. If I were talking to Vince Gilligan right now, I would tell him, ... Wait a few years, he's doing another show, then come back to me. Come back to me, because is interesting. To find out what are the pieces that made up Gustavo Fring, and where did he come from in terms of his relationship to the hierarchy in Chile would be very interesting.
And to see his family background."
helped fill in some of the blanks with Gus Fring's backstory, but as Esposito suggested, there are still many questions that remain about the character. One big mystery pertains to an apparent position of power he'd had in Chile, possibly connected to the Pinochet regime, but exactly what that was is still unclear. It has only been vaguely referenced, such as when Don Eladio (Steven Bauer) spared Fring's life in a flashback sequence while warning him, "The only reason you are alive... is because I know who you are.
But understand, you are not in Chile anymore." Notably, Hank Schrader (Dean Norris) and Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) also failed to find any information about his background, such as whether Gustavo Fring is even his real name.
Esposito has been nominated for an Emmy for playing Gus Fring for both and , but it doesn't seem likely that he would return to play Gus in another prequel that would take place decades prior to . If the project were animated, however, he could provide the voice, or potentially serve as the narrator if it's a live-action series, similar to what
. That would also mean that a new actor would have to play young Gus, and it might be a challenge to find someone else who could exceed so well in that unique role.
There are no active plans at this time to develop any new TV shows in the universe, though creator if it next projects don't end up working out. He's currently . The show has no connections to the universe.
