A video of a cat appearing seemingly smug after knocking his owner's phone off its charger has gone viral on .
The clip was posted by and has had over 841,000 views since it was shared six days ago. A caption shared with the post reads: "Oliver is so proud lmfaooo."
A message overlaid on the clip says: "When my cat knocked my phone off charge, so I overslept his neuter appointment. Why is he so proud?" The footage shows an orange-haired cat lying on a bed, staring blankly up towards the ceiling.
While the cat in the latest clip may have not been too keen on it, neutering is an important procedure recommended for pets for health and welfare reasons.
Neutering, also known as gonadectomy or orchiectomy for males, refers to sterilization, which entails removing the pet's reproductive organs, the "source of sexual hormones that may cause undesired mating behaviors," explains the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
In an article of VCA, one of North America's largest animal hospital chains, veterinarians Krista Williams and Ernest Ward noted: "Once a male cat reaches puberty, he will develop a number of behavioral changes that will make him a less desirable pet. He will become territorial and start to mark areas, even inside the house, by spraying urine.
"
This behavior increases the likelihood cats getting into fights with other felines for territorial dominance. Fight wounds can result in severe infections, abscesses and incurable diseases, such as FIV and FeLV, which cause immunosuppression and AIDS-like syndromes and tend to be more common in non-neutered male cats, the veterinarians explained.
The advice of the Veterinary Task Force on Feline Sterilization for Age of Spay and Neuter Surgery, which is backed by the AVMA, recommends the sterilization of cats by 5 months of age.
"Current evidence does not support an increased risk for cats of complications or long-term adverse health effects" with pediatric (cats aged from 6 to 14 weeks) or juvenile (cats aged over 16 weeks) sterilization, the task force said.
Sterilization may also help "reduce the unplanned/unwanted litters of kittens if veterinarians routinely schedule this surgery for client-owned cats at the end of the kitten vaccination series," the task force added.
