As the adage goes, if something is too good to be true, it usually is.

Case in point: AI chatbots. AI chatbots have undoubtedly changed the game since a number of them launched in 2022, introducing the concept of generative AI to over 180 million people globally.

They have revolutionised how millions of people do their jobs every day, and hiring managers are becoming increasingly savvy when it comes to spotting CVs that have been copied word-for-word.

However, that doesn’t mean you should abandon AI entirely. Below, we’re outlining how to use AI chatbots to craft and curate a standout CV, without suspicion, to bag the job you really want.

Do ask AI to include keywords 

It’s essential that you create a bespoke CV for every job you apply for, including essential keywords from the job description so that your application isn’t discarded by an application tracking system (ATS) that has been programmed to only put forward CVs that contain said keywords.

The easiest way to do this is by uploading your master CV document to an AI chatbot, asking it to include certain keywords.

It should return an updated CV with the relevant information seamlessly weaved into your existing skills and experience.

Don’t accept AI's first answer 

If you’re unhappy with the first answer the AI chatbot gives you, try different prompts and see if that makes a difference to the quality of the answers it generates. Similarly, don’t copy chunks of text without putting things into your own words, as this will also raise red flags. 

It’s also important to remember that certain AI chatbots only have knowledge of up to January 2022, so if you’re using it to help you write about market trends or economic projections for the industry you work in, it won’t be able to give you the most up-to-date information.

Do check your spelling 

Generally, AI uses the American spelling of words, so this can immediately be a tell-tale sign for British employers. If you are using an AI chatbot to help you create your CV, always double-check spellings to ensure you replace any rogue American spellings with the correct British ones.

Don’t ask AI to make you sound more experienced 

Most job applicants embellish their skills and experience on their CVs, and a recent American study has found that 70 per cent of workers have lied in some capacity on their CV to get the job they’ve applied for.*

This doesn’t mean you should turn to an AI chatbot to do your dirty work for you, as hiring managers will be able to spot the discrepancies a mile away. For example, if you’re applying for an entry level position but your CV reads like that of a CEO, it’ll be obvious you used AI to fudge your application.
