Let's take a closer look.
Often times, actors can relate to the characters that they portray in films or television. However, for Johnny Galecki, that was not the case when he took on the role of Leonard. Sure, he adds his own bits and pieces to Leonard, like wearing glasses. However, generally speaking, Galecki revealed he had little in common with Leonard on , but this was a good thing for the actor.
with . He said, "Not at all. Not one iota.” “Which is good,” he added. “Because I feel the more a character is similar to you, the more uncomfortable it can be to play that character. It’s probably the No. 1 reason I’ve enjoyed playing Leonard for 10 years.
"
However, Galecki admitted there was one thing he had in common with Leonard, and that was pointed out by co-star Jim Parsons.
"Jim Parsons (who plays Sheldon) once said that Leonard and I have a similar degree of sensitivity — which might not be completely untrue — but that’s it. As far as likenesses or intelligence or common interests — ZERO.”
Despite not having the same "intelligence," Johnny Galecki was able to do a fantastic job of portraying the role for 12 seasons. Given his longevity in the role, there's always a worry that he gets type cast in the role.
However, Galecki did not see this as an issue.
Johnny Galecki was very aware that this role could've possibly typecast his other characters down the road. Nonetheless, the actor did make much of it, and instead, he came to terms with it.
“I’ve just kind of come to terms with the fact that that’s always going to be the case,” he said. “I accepted that years ago — not with Leonard, in particular, but with any role that one has done even an OK job at. That’s what they want you to do next."
Galecki would go on to reveal that fans were able to see his range as an actor when he played himself on
"Ironically, the first time I ever heard anyone say that I had ‘range’ was after I played myself on three episodes of ‘Entourage.’”
Fans are eager to see what's next for the actor, as he hasn't appeared in much since came to an end. The actor is clearly enjoying his time away from the spotlight in Texas. He did hint at work behind the camera when came to an end. But it doesn't appear that the actor has been set on a project just yet.
Looking back at series finales, final episode certainly ranks up there among the elite. However, Johnny Galecki was initially shocked by the plan, given that Leonard was set to have a child with Penny.
Galecki revealed, "The pregnancy shocked me. I didn’t get it at first. Molaro and I talked about them maybe not [being pregnant]. We talked about relationships, and there was one in particular to his life that he felt was similar to Leonard and Penny’s."
Ultimately, the writers were trying to honor Leonard's statement from the pilot, when he revealed he'd have kids with Penny one day.
Galeci was able to look at the positives from the finale. "The main takeaway is that these friendships will continue; the writers didn’t want someone to move away. We wanted to leave the audience with the idea that these friendships and the love that they have continues.”
Fans were thrilled with exactly that, as the finale ended things off in the perfect way.
