That Horrific Friends Theory Is Tragic and 'Terrible' - But It Also Makes Sense

There are few things fans love more than theorizing, and one theory in particular tops the list of wild fan theories. which aired from 1994 to 2004, remains one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. It followed a group of six friends -- Monica, Rachel, Ross, Joey, Chandler and Phoebe -- navigating life in New York City together. Many would argue that it’s a near flawless television show. It continues to delight new audiences and give young people entirely unrealistic expectations of what life in their twenties will look like.

is fun and lighthearted, but that hasn’t stopped the theorizers from crafting one extremely dark theory.

In 2015, a fan took to to pose the possibility that all of takes place inside Phoebe's head. To make matters even more tragic, the dark theory suggests Phoebe has been homeless since the death of her mother and is merely watching the other friends inside the coffee house from the sidewalk.

Who Was Phoebe Buffay?

Phoebe was one fo the six core friends in the series, who is known for her folksy and quirky personality. She was born to Frank and Lily Buffay on February 16, although her birthday is the subject of a much larger debate, as it often changed in the show's continuity.

She has a twin sister named Ursula, a waitress whose crass and cynical personality offsets Phoebe's fun and optimistic charm. Throughout , Phoebe made money as a massage therapist but had a true passion for singing and songwriting, which led to the earworm known as "Smelly Cat." To pursue her passion, Phoebe would sing songs at the public library, the subway and Central Perk, the coffee shop the friends often hang out at.

Despite her ditzy personality, Phoebe is actually quite intelligent; she can speak several languages other than English, two of which are Italian and French. But she never puts her hidden intelligence to much use, especially when it comes to her simple, but catchy songs.

By the end of the series, she marries Mike Hannigan and gives birth to triplets as a surrogate for her brother and his wife. This all may not have really happened though, according to a popular yet dreadful fan theory.

Could Phoebe's Personality Suggest Mental Health Collapse?

It is a theory that is reviled by most fans and even but it gained traction online and hasn’t been forgotten. While there is likely no deep underlying message or meaning to the straightforward, twenty-two minute comedy, the theory seems to have staying power because it actually does make some good points.

Phoebe Buffay is easily the odd one of the group, often described as “eccentric.” However, instead of simply being the zany and Bohemian comic relief, she has an immensely traumatic backstory. It is easy to see why the other friends in the group connect, but from “Smelly Cat” to her alter ego Regina Phalange, Phoebe’s oddities never quite fit in with the rest of them.

The character is played for laughs (as they all are), but Phoebe has led a truly tragic life prior to the events of the show. Her mother died by suicide when she was a child, and she spent her teen years living on the streets and in cars.

Concerning to her friends, Phoebe participates in New Age ideas that are based on superstitions, most of the time to remain in touch with her deceased relatives. She casually throws out stories about getting hepatitis from a pimp, stabbing a cop who stabbed her first and being chased by a murderous patient that escaped mental health institution for her sweet sixteen as though these are normal jokes. There are also suggestions that Phoebe has a pretty extensive criminal record, referencing the criminal underworld and her "connections."

Friends' Phoebe Theory Could Explain the More Ridiculous Elements

All of this is to say that while it is a wild theory, it is not completely impossible to see how fans came up with it. The snippets of Phoebe’s life that are revealed throughout the ten seasons are consistently tragic and little, if any, explanation is ever given for how she eventually turned her life around. It is just as likely that she never made it off the streets and that to cope with her trauma she imagined a better life for herself, filled with friends and laughter. It would also explain away some of the more ridiculous elements of the show, like how they could

, or that time that they poked Ugly Naked Guy with a giant stick from across the street.

But as her backstory is almost always tragic, there are small details of her life that remain inconsistent -- possibly due to Phoebe's difficulties separating reality from fantasy. Her age has been wildly conflicting on the series, which at first was believed to be partially at the fault of writers. Season 7 reveals, though, that Phoebe was wrong about her age all along -- she was born a year earlier than previously thought for the first 31 years of her life. It's also never specifically confirmed how Phoebe came to be a part of the friend group.

All that's known is that she was Monica's roommate before Rachel prior to the events of the show.

The Dark Phoebe Theory Isn't the Only Strange Friends' Conspiracy Out There

Gunther purposely reserved the couch so he knew he would always get to see his crush, Rachel. Joey and Phoebe were having a casual affair throughout the entire series. Monica was a test subject for an experimental drug at a weight loss camp, and while it provided the results, the drug may have contributed to both her OCD and infertility.

Since streaming has transformed the way that people watch television, it has become easier than ever to analyze every single detail of a show, and

is no exception. Over the years, fans have gathered across the internet to pose numerous dark theories. One such conspiracy suggests all the characters are patients in a mental health facility, while another accuses Monica and Joey both of a dark, hidden addiction to drugs, with Monica favoring cocaine and Joey spending all his time smoking marijuana. Since the series launched with Rachel running from her wedding, one fan theory poses that the entire sitcom was an anxiety-created dream Rachel experienced while trying to escape her pending nuptials with Barry.

While each of the theories mentioned is tonally off from the sitcom it aims to explain, they are each logical enough to at least provide food for thought.

After all, those who are a bit cynical, and like their sitcoms to have a deeper meaning, the Dark Phoebe theory casts the shadow they’ve been craving over the entire show. While most fans would rather stick to debating whether , there's something oddly satisfying about peering beyond the looking glass and glimpsing something tragic and dark.

“I was so confused and insecure. Because I thought I was beautiful. So many people told me I was beautiful. Who am I? I feel like a vase shattered across the ground, and left there in the alleyway. A chandelier that was cut from the ceiling, and then all the people left the house. I can’t imagine on this day, what it would feel like to recover. Am I allowed to be this sad? Am I allowed to lay on the ground in a heap and wail? I want to have hands again, and legs. I want to smile. I want to believe that I can. But again, I want to be sad for the rest of time. I want to wear my sadness in long strands. I want to lay on the ocean floor and weep stalactites. For a hundred years. A tree has fallen onto my chest. The sky is spinning, and it won’t slow down. I don’t want to feel any of this.” A excerpt of an untitled essay from NIGHTBIRDE The NIGHTBIRDE book “Poems for the dark” should be available for presale soon.
