AS A FORMER bodybuilding legend and star of countless action movie classics, it is safe to say that —and the Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia champion is very much a stickler for the proper etiquette when working out.
In a new tongue-in-cheek public service announcement video captured at Gold's Gym in Venice Beach and posted to his Instagram, Schwarzenegger provides a primer on the correct protocol when exercising in a public or shared space.
Arnold's first rule: Don't take over equipment
"You should never make your phone calls and do your social media and whatever you want to do on your iPhone or your iPad while you're sitting on a machine," says Schwarznegger.
If you need to use your phone, he instructs you to step away from the equipment, freeing it up for others and stopping a lengthy line from forming,
Arnold's second rule: Put your weights away.
It's very poor form to leave your weights lying around when you've stopped using them. "It's very important because there will be someone else down the rack, 5 pounds, 10 pounds, and all of a sudden they're missing the 10-pound weights," he explains. "So put it back in the right place, the dumbbells, the barbells and everything, so it is really a gymnasium that everyone can use."
Arnold's third and final rule: Share.
Schwarzenegger advises being mindful of other gymgoers who might want to work in with you on the machine you're using, and to not hog a particular piece of equipment. Instead, try alternating sets with them, and who knows: you might end up making a new workout buddy.
"Be kind to each other, be nice, be accommodating, because it's a community," he says.
