Australian basketball identity Brian Goorjian has labelled the abuse directed at star Josh Giddey over his alleged underage relationship the worst he has witnessed in his 50 years in the sport.

Giddey, 21, was formally cleared this week by the Newport Beach Police Department, six weeks after an investigation was initially launched into the matter.

It can now also be revealed the Californian high school student who allegedly had a relationship with Giddey when she was 15 

Speaking on Channel Nine's Today program on Friday from , Goorjian - who is the Boomers coach - said he hopes the  City Thunder star can 'move forward' and is confident he will '

come out the other side'. 

'He is a special kid, the way he handled it all ... I was incredibly impressed,' the six-time NBL championship-winning coach said.

It can now also be revealed the girl (pictured right) who allegedly had a relationship with Giddey refused to be interviewed by detectives in order to protect her privacy

'To have 17,000 people screaming [at him] whenever he touched the ball, and the cat calls ... it was unsettling.

'But he remained steely faced, and I have never been a part of something like that before.

'Now Josh has the opportunity to just play basketball and move forward.'

Goorjian also confirmed the point guard will be an 'integral' part of the Boomers squad ahead of the Paris Olympics.

Newport Beach Police Department have since released a statement, with the case closed due to police finding no corroborating evidence.

'After a thorough and exhaustive examination, we have completely closed our investigation into the information that was circulating on social media involving Josh Giddey.

'Our detectives have reviewed all of the available information and were unable to corroborate any criminal activity related to Mr Giddey. 

'The Newport Beach Police Department is committed to ensuring accurate information is disseminated to the public, while also ensuring the rights of all those involved.

'

Giddey was dropped as an ambassador for Australian breakfast cereal Weet-Bix, three years after signing a lucrative four-year deal following the accusations

Giddey has continued to play for the Thunder in the NBA throughout the investigation, with the allegations first coming to light last November.

It is understood the incident unfolded in 2021, with the Thunder guard believing at the time the girl was 19 when they met at a nightclub.

After discovering she was in fact a minor, Giddey is said to have broken off the relationship the following day.

Giddey was asked about the accusations when they first emerged at a team practice session, but refused to open up about the claims made against him.

'Yeah, I mean I understand the question obviously,' Giddey told the reporter at the time. 'But there's no further comment right now.'

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in December that Giddey would not be suspended purely due to an allegation.

And despite being cleared of any wrongdoing by, Giddey was stripped of his ambassador role for Australian breakfast cereal Weet-Bix.
