Supersport have confirmed the release date for the highly-anticipated documentary following the Springboks during the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

The documentary series, ‘Chasing The Sun 2’, will hit South Africa’s screens in March 2024.

It follows on from the hugely successful documentary series ‘Chasing The Sun’, which followed the Springboks in the build-up to and during their successful campaign in Japan in 2019.

“Hope is an interesting thing”

broadcaster Supersport confirmed the release date on Monday and gave fans another sneak peek into what they can expect with a second trailer.

The snippet features now-retired Springboks number eight Duane Vermeulen speaking about hope with snapshots of stars Jesse Kriel, Steven Kitshoff, Canan Moodie, RG Snyman, Manie Libbok, Cheslin Kolbe and Damian Willemse all shown.

Coaches Jacques Nienaber and Mzwandile Stick also appeared in the snippet, while an emotional Deon Fourie and Kwagga Smith were also featured.

“At a stage, I just looked up and closed my eyes and the tears started running down my face,” Vermeulen says in the latest snippet.

Later adding: “F**k, hope is an interesting thing.”

“Goosebumps already!”

As mentioned above, this is the second sneak peek into the documentary series, with Supersport releasing the first trailer in November last year.

That trailer featured captain Siya Kolisi talking about what he loves about the Springboks and included highlights from the 2023 tournament.

The first Chasing The Sun documentary series was a massive hit in South Africa and currently has a 9.6 rating on IMDb.

It went behind the scenes with the Springboks throughout 2019 as they eventually went on to win their third Rugby World Cup title. The series captured the heart of South Africans and proved to be a real tear-jerker, particularly when Erasmus broke down on camera when telling a story about Makazole Mapimpi.

And this time around, fans are prepared for what is to come.

“Goosebumps already! I can’t wait for this to be released… going to start stocking up on tissues already,” one Springboks supporter wrote on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

Much like the documentary for the 2019 World Cup, Chasing the Sun 2 follows the Springboks’ journey to winning the tournament and is bound to feature some intense moments, particularly during the knockout stages as South Africa won their quarter-final, semi-final and final by a single point during the World Cup.

“I was so confused and insecure. Because I thought I was beautiful. So many people told me I was beautiful. Who am I? I feel like a vase shattered across the ground, and left there in the alleyway. A chandelier that was cut from the ceiling, and then all the people left the house. I can’t imagine on this day, what it would feel like to recover. Am I allowed to be this sad? Am I allowed to lay on the ground in a heap and wail? I want to have hands again, and legs. I want to smile. I want to believe that I can. But again, I want to be sad for the rest of time. I want to wear my sadness in long strands. I want to lay on the ocean floor and weep stalactites. For a hundred years. A tree has fallen onto my chest. The sky is spinning, and it won’t slow down. I don’t want to feel any of this.” A excerpt of an untitled essay from NIGHTBIRDE The NIGHTBIRDE book “Poems for the dark” should be available for presale soon.
