The iconic pop singer, 88, who was spotted moments after leaving a restaurant with his pal, put on an animated display while making his way along the city streets.

During his stroll the Chances Are star was all smiles, and at one point lifted his arms out high and wide in a playful manner.

Still defying Father Time, Mathis looked to be in fabulous shape, all while dressing youthful in a casual-cool style in green jeans, a black sweater over a white shirt, and bright white sneakers.

Rounding out his look, the Gilmer, native, who grew up in San Francisco from the age of five, is sporting longer locks these days, which he partially covered for his afternoon outing with a Detroit Tigers baseball cap.

Still going strong after eight decades in the public eye as a singer of popular music, Mathis proved he can still wow an audience with his signature vocals when he performed his smash hit Twelfth Of Never onstage at a Christmas concert in Chicago.

The superstar crooner is actually the third-best-selling artist of the 20th century, selling a whopping 360 million records worldwide over his famed career that dates back to the mid-1950s.

After realizing his son's talent at a young age, Mathis' father, who worked in vaudeville as a singer and pianist, encouraged him to pursue music by buying him an upright piano.

At 13, he got to study under the tutelage of voice teacher Connie Cox after accepting him as her student in exchange for work around her house in the late 1940s.

He ended up honing his craft with Cox for six years, learning vocal scales and exercises, voice production, classical and operatic singing.

In a show of respect and gratitude, Mathis took to social media back in May 2018 and shared a photo of Cox, along with a message about how instrumental she was in helping teach him about singing and music as a whole.

'Here is a rare photo of Connie Cox, the wonderful teacher that helped young Johnny fine tune his vocal skills, trading chores at her studio for vocal lessons,' he wrote in the caption on X (formerly Twitter). '62 years later he still sings her praises daily. Thank goodness for teachers like her! #TeacherAppreciationDay.'

While many people have described his style as a romantic singer, Mathis' catalog of music included standard pop, Latin American, soul, R&B, show tunes, Tin Pan Alley, soft rock, blues, country, and even a little disco in the late 1970s.

In 2018, Mathis paid tribute to his voice teacher Connie Cox on Teacher's Appreciation Day for helping him fine tune his singing skills, in exchange for doing chores around her house

During his illustrious career that dates back to 1956, Mathis has recorded a staggering 73 studio albums, 10 of which achieved sales of 500,000 units to earn him Gold certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Six of his compilation albums also went Gold, while six eventually went Platinum after reaching sales of one million copies.

Mathis has had five of his albums on the Billboard charts simultaneously, an achievement equaled by only three other singers that included Frank Sinatra, Barry Manilow and Prince.

In 2003, the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences awarded him with the Lifetime Achievement Award. This Special Merit Award is presented by vote of the Recording Academy's National Trustees to performers who have made creative contributions of outstanding artist significance to the field of recording.

Mathis has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for three separate recordings, which included Chances Are (1998), Misty (2002), It's Not For Me To Say (2008).

Less than two decades into his career, Mathis was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame for his contributions to music in June 1972.

“I was so confused and insecure. Because I thought I was beautiful. So many people told me I was beautiful. Who am I? I feel like a vase shattered across the ground, and left there in the alleyway. A chandelier that was cut from the ceiling, and then all the people left the house. I can’t imagine on this day, what it would feel like to recover. Am I allowed to be this sad? Am I allowed to lay on the ground in a heap and wail? I want to have hands again, and legs. I want to smile. I want to believe that I can. But again, I want to be sad for the rest of time. I want to wear my sadness in long strands. I want to lay on the ocean floor and weep stalactites. For a hundred years. A tree has fallen onto my chest. The sky is spinning, and it won’t slow down. I don’t want to feel any of this.” A excerpt of an untitled essay from NIGHTBIRDE The NIGHTBIRDE book “Poems for the dark” should be available for presale soon.
