The Turpin siblings are seeking a 'shocking' settlement from foster childcare providers after they were allegedly .'

Their story shocked the nation in 2018 when Jordan Turpin, then-17, escaped her gruesome family home from a bedroom window, leading police to find her 12 siblings .

Six of the siblings who were underage were sent to a foster home, where they heartbreakingly suffered a 'double whammy' of trauma as they were again abused by their foster parents, according to their attorney Elan Zektser.

'Some of the kids will tell you that was even worse than what they experienced at the hands of their parents,' Zektser told the

Now six years on from their escape, Zektser said he hopes lawsuits filed in July 2022 against Riverside County and ChildNet, a foster family service, will reach a 'shocking' sum.

The Turpin family made headlines in 2018 after 13 siblings were rescued from their parents' 'house of horrors' in Perris, California where they were forced to live under horrific, abusive conditions

Six of the siblings who were still minors at the time were then placed in foster care under Marcelino and Rosa Olguin (pictured at their arraignment last December) who are now facing child abuse charges against multiple foster children

Elan Zektser, an attorney for some of the siblings, said he is seeking a 'shocking' settlement to atone for the systematic failings impacting the Turpins, adding: 'The best way to effectuate change is through the pocketbook'

In the years since they fled their prison-like home, the Turpin siblings have struggled to come to terms with their new reality and find everyday tasks a challenge.

Despite the abuse they allegedly suffered at the hands of their foster family, Zektser blamed their parents - David and Louise, both now serving life in prison - for their ongoing difficulties adjusting.

He continued: 'The thing that kills me most is that when they were in the Turpin home, they were told they didn't deserve to be like everyone else, that they were bad kids, bad people - that's what their parents put on them.

'And then the foster family used that against them and compounded those feelings, telling them, 'No one wants you, look at what your parents did, they were right: you are nothing.'

'So when you have enough people in your life telling you that you are nobody and nothing and don’t deserve what everyone else has in life, it has a profound effect on your psyche.'

The attorney said that the siblings are doing well 'all things considered', but said 'some of them are still struggling greatly.

The 13 siblings were aged between 2 and 29 when their ordeal finally came to an end six years ago, however their malnourished state led police to initially believe they were all minors.

Harrowing footage captured the moment Jordan was able to , where she warned: 'My two little sisters right now are chained up.'

Jordan crawled out of a window and called the police using a cell phone in January 2018. She said she walked on the street because she didn't know about how to use a sidewalk

David and Louise Turpin pleaded guilty to 14 counts of torture and other abuse in 2019 and were sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

They are eligible for parole in 21 years

David and Louise Turpin - who are now serving life in prison - regularly beat and restrained their children, fed them just once a day, and only allowed them a shower once a year

Officers searched the squalid home to find the situation was far worse, as the children had been subjected to years of beatings and sadistic rules.

This included only being allowed just one shower a year, restricted to one meal a day, and a near-total blackout in communication from the outside world.

David and Louise would later plead guilty to 14 counts of sickening abuse, , and are both serving life in prison.

After a stint in hospital, the six siblings who were underage were placed in a foster home by Riverside County and ChildNet, with the home ran by Marcelino Olguin, his wife Rosa, and their daughter Lennys.

Zektser's hopes of a 'shocking' settlement sum stem from the doubling of trauma they allegedly endured at the hands of the foster family.

He said they were again subjected to physical, emotional and sexual abuse, alleging in a July 2022 lawsuit the Olguins told the children to kill themselves because they were only targeted by their parents as they were 'unlovable.

Among the harrowing claims included force feeding the children until they threw up, before making them eat the vomit.

All three family members were arrested in January 2021, with Marcelino charged with 13 counts including lewd act with a child and willful child cruelty.

Rosa and Lennys both stand accused of aiding his behavior. All three have pleaded not guilty in their case, which is still reportedly pending.

Zektser said their case is among the worst he has seen in his career, and feels only a 'shocking' settlement will send a message.

'The best way to effectuate change is through the pocketbook.

I really believe that I've seen it firsthand,' he told the US Sun.

'And so you know when a county is hit with a giant lawsuit and has to pay a substantial amount of money they don’t want to have to do that again.

'Whether they all say they care for kids or they don't care for kids, I know what they do care about and that is their financial status.'

After Jordan's escape, details later emerged about how the Turpins beat and starved their children, shackling them to beds and denying them basic hygiene like showers

The attorney heartbreakingly added that the siblings have been left with extremely low self-value, and 'not everybody can go to a counselor and just get better.'

'The hard thing for me is watching all of them struggling to have any kind of self-vale - I think that's the hardest thing for them.

'No matter what you see on social media, having some sense of self-value is probably the most difficult thing because then everything stems from that, thinking you're worthy.

'For us, when we say stuff like that, it's thinking you're worthy of a relationship, or a job, but for the Turpins they wonder if they're even worthy to have lunch.

'They struggle to feel worthy of even the most fundamental human necessities. 'Should I eat lunch today? Am I being selfish for eating more than I used to?'

'These are the questions they're forced to ask themselves and it's so sad.

'And then all this stuff was compounded in the foster home. It's really just shocking and upsetting.'

“I was so confused and insecure. Because I thought I was beautiful. So many people told me I was beautiful. Who am I? I feel like a vase shattered across the ground, and left there in the alleyway. A chandelier that was cut from the ceiling, and then all the people left the house. I can’t imagine on this day, what it would feel like to recover. Am I allowed to be this sad? Am I allowed to lay on the ground in a heap and wail? I want to have hands again, and legs. I want to smile. I want to believe that I can. But again, I want to be sad for the rest of time. I want to wear my sadness in long strands. I want to lay on the ocean floor and weep stalactites. For a hundred years. A tree has fallen onto my chest. The sky is spinning, and it won’t slow down. I don’t want to feel any of this.” A excerpt of an untitled essay from NIGHTBIRDE The NIGHTBIRDE book “Poems for the dark” should be available for presale soon.
